Celebrating (a third) Adoption

July 29, 2010

When the mom of these three cuties contacted me to set up a Celebrating Adoption session earlier this week, I think she was hoping for something a few weeks out.  But since my schedule is packed for the next few weeks with families looking to do portraits before the older kids go back to school, I was afraid I might not be able to accommodate her.   But the session must have been meant to be, since another client’s cancellation opened up a slot for them right away.   The session was in honor of the adoption of the youngest, but he was joining two big sisters who also were adopted from China.

My Nephew

It’s a boy!  My younger brother and his wife are celebrating the birth of their first child, and I am so excited to have my first nephew.  I had a lot of fun planning this newborn shoot with my sister-in-law.  My brother is a big Phillies fan, so we wanted to include a little baseball theme.  Isn’t the little baseball hat my sister-in-law found on Etsy the cutest?

Passing Through

These siblings stopped in for a session while visiting their grandparents here in the DC area.   We got an early start to our session, and I was surprised at how many cyclists and runners we had to dodge at the park even early in the morning.  I guess they all wanted to beat the heat, too!

Beach Week

July 13, 2010

Wanted to share a little of my own family photos from our week at the beach (I took the ones of the girls, and my dad was kind enough to take the ones I set up of our family).  I really wanted to have some nice family photos in honor of our 10th wedding anniversary, and since we were spending it at the shore, I figured we would do the photos at the beach.

We went down to the beach during the magic hour (30 minutes before and after sunset), which I have found to be the best time for beach portraits on the East Coast.   I love the warm glow it gives everyone.

I think it’s good for photographers to go through the process of planning and implementing family photos, because it reminds us of how much our clients go through for our shoots with them.  I spent hours shopping and debating over what everyone would wear, and finding the right location, and then haggled with each family member to ensure his or her cooperation.  And then after all my planning, the shoot was nearly foiled by a biting fly that got my older daughter in the leg during one of the family shots.  She was so upset and cautious for the rest of the shoot it was hard to get a smile out of her.  But as you can see from the last shot I shared, I was able to get a few smiles from her, and even show off those two “big girl” teeth.

Sunday in Old Town

I had the opportunity to work with this family for the second time today–their first session was last fall (check it out on the blog here).  Now she’s a busy 2-year-old and we took advantage of the *slightly* cooler weather to explore Old Town.   Sprinklers and mini-flags turned out to be among her favorite finds along the way.

Another Year, Another Tree :)

I am always delighted to photograph repeat customers.  I worked with these guys last summer, and remembered how much they liked climbing tress, so I wanted to be sure to find a new location with some more trees for them this time.   This year they went for a more casual look and they were much more comfortable with the camera.
