Snowy Blossoms

March 31, 2011

It’s rare to have a snowy cherry blossom season, so when they called for snow last weekend, I told my 7-year-old daughter that we would get up first thing in the morning and head into town and take some photos of the snowy blossoms.  That morning I woke up and went to her room to wake her, and she was already up and dressed and excited to head out!   We drove in (love the DC area roads with no traffic and no construction!) and parked over at the Washington Marina where in the metered marking that’s free on Sundays.  We passed by the fish market, which was already up and running even so early on a Sunday morning, and some homeless people who were huddled under the bridge to escape the elements.  When we arrived at the Jefferson memorial even though the sun had yet to show itself, there were already a number of people with large cameras, monopods, and tripods who apparently had the same idea that we did.  It was definitely a great way to see the tidal basin.

Class of 2011

March 29, 2011

This was the second session I’ve done for this family this year–the first was her sister’s recent newborn session, and now this beautiful senior popped in during her visit from Ohio for some portraits.   Senior portraits are a little venture away from my regular portfolio, but tons of fun and a great chance to be creative with backdrops and lighting.

Woof.

March 25, 2011

My morning session was postponed, so with my spare time I decided to take my pups outside for a few quick photos.  It’s been too long, and my puppy is not even officially a puppy anymore!   I love the popped up ears and crazy underbite on Lucy (the affenpoo), and Penny (the border collie mix)’s licorice nose.  While I don’t offer pet photography as part of the business, I’m always happy to include the dogs as part of family portraits.

A year later and a little sister richer

March 22, 2011

This new big brother first visited me last year for a celebrating adoption session, and he was back this year with his little sister.   He’s still a charmer with a sweet smile and little bit of playing hard-to-get.

Pink/Blue

March 17, 2011

Today I had my third session with this fun family–and the first with their new baby boy!   I couldn’t believe how grown up big sis looked since I last saw her at our session in July.   This morning at their house we got an outdoor mini-shoot with big sis before moving back inside for her brother’s newborn session.  She was all smiles and charm, and her baby brother was such a sweet little bundle.

Pink and Black

March 14, 2011

We were surprised today with some gorgeous March weather, so we decided to end our studio session with a little trip outside for a few casual portraits.   This little 9-month-month old wanted to explore, both inside and out, but luckily had plenty of smiles when we could get her attention.

Junior

March 8, 2011

This little one-month-old is my good friend’s nephew, and I was excited to meet him this morning.   He was the perfect subject for our shoot this morning–sleepy for most of the shoot but eyes open and calm and open-eyed for the rest.  Mom and dad mentioned that he’s rarely cold, so he didn’t mind at all hanging out in just a diaper cover during the shoot.  And I love how he came with sweet messages from his family and loved ones on his little corrective casts.

Fausnachts and Flowers

March 7, 2011

Ah, March is such a wishy-washy month–it can never decide if it wants to be winter or spring, so it’s a little of both!  I am very fond of the month being a March baby myself, and I enjoy both the remnants of winter and the beginnings of spring.  For example, last night I let the dog outside before heading to bed and was greeted by snow, and then this morning I walked outside to find the hardiest of the crocuses already blooming and being flocked by insects who have been waiting for the first pollen of the season.

This March has been host to pre-Lenten carnival celebrations as well.   In honor of my Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, I went in search of the traditional Fastnachts (potato doughnuts served on Fat/Shrove Tuesday).   I found some at the local Wegman’s store which looked yummy, although a little different than the style I’ve seen before.  The ones I’m used to are plain and it’s more traditional to eat them with Turkey syrup, but I have always preferred apple butter on mine.   The apple butter was a little much on top of the sugar–I may have to specially request some plain ones next time ; )

For more information on Fastnachts and the traditions here’s an article from today’s CSM.

And brothers and sister, too

March 4, 2011

I last saw this mom of 4 at her maternity session last month.   This time she came back with her new baby girl, and the rest of the family.  This little 9-day-old was so patient throughout our shoot, and after some photos with her brothers and sisters we managed to get fun shots of her alone.

Look “Who” Stopped By

March 3, 2011

I just love when parents bring fun props to their newborn sessions.  Isn’t this owl hat a hoot!?   It was just the perfect thing to add some fun to our shoot.
