Can you believe my little nephew is already 3 months old? My blog followers may remember his newborn session and the cute baseball pics. Well this visit we did a quick outdoor shoot. We used my parents’ backyard as our backdrop, and even used my dad’s childhood wagon.

Who knew that the steps of the planetarium were so fun for photos? I met these adorable girls and their parents last weekend while I was up in Pennsylvania and it was one of those strange mornings when it’s still quite chilly from the fall evening, but the temperature was working its way up to a promised afternoon high in the mid-80s.

This beautiful mom is a dear friend of mine from college who now lives up in Pennsylvania not too far from my family. She asked if I could do a session for her last June, and I feel terrible that it took me until October to get up there and have a few hours free to do some portraits for her family. I did portraits for her son two years ago (here’s the link to his last session), and now they are a family of 4. I enjoyed meeting her sweet little girl for the first time, and we lucked out with a gorgeous day for our long-awaited shoot.

It was just a little over a year ago when I photographed big sis as a newborn (check out the blog post here), and today she was back with her new little sister. They were both such great subjects to work with today–gotta love both toddler and newborn smiles. Here’s a quick look back at big sis last year when I did her newborn session:

I was having fun “virtually” shopping for family outfits, and thought I would try another of my favorite color combinations: orange and brown. I just love the little baby romper from Hanna!

I loved the purples that the last family I photographed came in and I decided to put together some family outfit planning ideas using purples. I’m loving purple and gray this year, and as a new twist, I tried purple as an accent with greens and browns. As I usually advise my clients, it’s best to start with one item and plan a color palette of two or three colors around it. The first set of outfits was inspired by the woman’s corsage cardigan from Talbots that I saw featured on their mailer. The second set of outfits saw inspired by the pretty purple Gymboree sweater dress. My daughter has this dress, and it photographs beautifully.

When these clients mentioned that they wanted to include their 200 lb dog in the in their family portraits, I had a hard time imagining how big it would be. I have 2 dogs at home–the “big” one is 35 lbs and my puppy is right around 10 lbs, so he was much more dog than I am used to. But Kermit was a very easy-going subject, and a real sweetheart of a dog.
